Cleveland Race Week sailors hit Lake Erie waters after storms come through (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Despite choppy waves, Cleveland Race Week sailors headed out on Lake Erie to kick off a week-long competition and celebration of Cleveland sailing.

Cleveland’s largest sailing regatta is approaching its 40th anniversary and operates out of Edgewater Yacht Club. More than 300 boats will participate in the races this week. Another 300 will participate in Youth Day on Wednesday. Junior sailors are eight to 18 years old. The oldest sailors reach 80 years old.

The regatta overlaps with remembrance events for the 50th anniversary of the historic Cuyahoga River fire, which took place on June 22, 1969.

CLEVELAND RACE WEEK DAY 2 OVERVIEW

Cleveland Race week update from Suzie Zack

Going into the day everyone was wondering if we’d see the big gusts and thunderstorms that were predicted. Instead we saw 10-14  out of the SSW which means beautiful flat seas here in Cleveland. Race Committee was on the shifts, as were the leaders. Hooligan holding strong with a 1, 1, 2, Team I-Ball came in with 2, 2, 4 and Proper Villain 4, 3, 1. Tomorrow’s racing will be very competitive as the leaders look to claim the title of Lake Erie Champion.

CLEVELAND RACE WEEK DAY 1 OVERVIEW

Cleveland Race Week Update from Suzie Florence Zach...

20 T10s were on the line for the start of the Lake Erie Championship at Cleveland Race Week. Breeze was predicted to be big but settled down to a shifty 8-14 out of the west with 4 ft choppy seas. Team I-Ball is leading the fleet with 7 points after 3 races. Nuts in 2nd with 10 points and Proper Villain in 3rd with 11 points. The rest of the fleet is nipping at their heels. Looking forward to 2 more days of competitive racing.

Editor's note: it looks like Hooligan: Team Flat Stanley Racing managed bullets in race 1 and 3, coupled with an OCS for race 2 that has them looking up at the leaders. It will be fun to see if Trey Sheehan and his team can battle back to the top of the standings!

Editor’s Note 2: Hooligan was granted redress and is now in 1st place at the end of day 1!
